“Pipeline to Design”
AIA San Mateo County was founded in 1983. In the 23 years since, members have participated in one community design charrette per year on average. These events generate great public excitement and serve as a catalyst for further community action. Issues addressed have included: revitalizing older downtowns; visions for improving a downtown park; housing; density; local and regional transportation; and public libraries. Several local communities have benefited from these charrettes.
The goal is to improve the process by which charrettes are created by systemizing the outreach and selection phases. This initiative will create an open, transparent, and sustainable pipeline for our annual community service events. This key element has remained unaddressed over the years since it is broader than any one particular community group, issue, or event.
The three elements of the initiative are:

This initiative, which will create an open, transparent, and sustainable pipeline for the annual community service events, will comprise three elements: outreach to community organizations, establishment of an advisory group, and a formalizing of the proposal and review process.
