Steve Winkel, FAIA Appointed to Building Standards Commission

Steven Winkel, FAIA, PE, CASp was recently appointed to serve as the Architect Member to the California Building Standards Commission. First appointed in 1999, this reappointment on marks the beginning of his fourth, four-year term. As testimony to the level of respect for Steve, his reappointment to the CBSC was endorsed with letters of support from CALBO, SEAOC, CBIA, CBPA and BOMA.

The CBSC is responsible for the administration and implementation of each building code cycle, which includes the proposal, review and adoption processes.
One of the most significant proposal to be decide by the CBSC was last week’s decision to align the access provisions of the 2013 California Building Code with the 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act standards with California amendments. The new code will be published online and available for purchase on July 1, 2013. By law, the public is given 180-days (six months) to review this new code before it goes into effect on January 1, 2014. For more information visit the Commission website.

Steve is recognized, regarded, and respected as an expert in building codes and regulations. In addition to being a licensed architect for more than 40 years, Steve is a licensed civil engineer, landscape architect, and a Certified Access Specialist. Since 2005 Steve has managed the San Francisco office of The Preview Group. Winkel is also the author of several books on building codes.

    This is great news for the profession and the public! Steve has served a critically important role as a ‘hands on expert’ on the commission who can balance the diverse views and issues while keeping a thoughtful perspective on the impact regulations can have on economic development and the ‘greening’ of our aging infrastructure.
