AIACC Chapters in California

The local level is where AIA members roll up their sleeves, get personally involved, and make a difference in their profession and their communities. Local chapter members participate in chapter events and activities, volunteer on committees, and make policy decisions for the chapter. Most chapters have full or part time staff to carry out these activities. Involvement on this level allows members to reap the many rewards of membership. Local AIA chapters offer many services to members and the community. Benefits vary somewhat from chapter to chapter so be sure to consult your local chapter for specific information.

Services at the local chapter level include:

  • Chapter Activities: committee participation, monthly meetings/events, and design award programs.
  • Member Services: periodic publications to keep members informed, directories of members and services, job banks for individuals seeking employment and/or employers seeing employees, and resource centers.
  • Continuing Education: licensing exam preparation classes, professional practice seminars, and other educational activities.
  • Assistance to the Public: client referrals, AIA legal contract document sales, post-disaster/urban design workshops, and reference information.
  • Local Government Relations: members and staff monitor and act on local legislation that affects the practice of architects, form policy positions involving architecture in the community, and facilitate communication with local governmental officials by bringing members and local decision makers together.
  • Architecture Foundations: vehicles to spread the word about architects and architecture through public forums, education programs, scholarships and grant giving.
